Stepping out into the unknown-How I transformed one of my greatest fears

You and I are going to go through many fears in this life.  Remember that no experience is wasted unless you LEARN from it.

I remember it like it was yesterday.  I wanted to incorporate doing video blogging and was finding it very difficult to be in front of a camera.  And my number 1 greatest fear when I got started blogging was honestly video.

I remember thinking, “Oh no! I can’t” I remember looking back when I started blogging. Everything to me was scary.  It was scary literally being OPEN and sharing my own personal story.

I mean I can give you all the excuses in the world the feelings I used to have about it.  My excuses were:

a.) I don’t have the right video camera

b.) I don’t know where I should film

c.) I simply look funny and weird

d.) I sound awful

e.) I don’t know what topics I’m going to talk about

f.) what are people going to think

I can tell you all the EXCUSES I had because I was just there eight months ago.

My friend looked at me said, “what are you serious? You’re actually going to do videos.”  And after much contemplation “I thought hey why not?”

And I’ll tell you a secret shhh! Just between you & me.  I still get scared.  Every time, I hit the publish button there’s an angst in my stomach.

In this quick video, I share with you my anxiety and fear to get started doing video blogging and what I learned from it.

Life is just simply too short not to do the things you want to do.

There’s always going to be fear.  You have to face that fear everyday until you make the decision to take action.  When you step into it and take action it slowly diminishes.  There’s a sense of elation because anything worthwhile in life requires risk. That’s it!
PERIOD!

I mean who wouldn’t agree with me in all the fears we have as human beings

1.) Speaking in front of people

2.) Fear of not being liked

3.) Fear of failure

4.) Starting a company

5.) Fear of buying a home for the first time (fear of falling in love, fear of first Job interview, etc…)

The list goes on and on…

The best question often breeds the best answers in life.  I learned short years ago when I face fears is to ask myself these valuable YET powerful questions:

 What can I do?

What could I do?

What am I capable of?

What could I do with my life without boundaries and limitations?

When you begin the journey of believing in yourself, trusting your inner voice, you will make your life truly inspiring and wonderful.  And the choice is yours.  Here are quick tips I follow when fear takes over me.

 1.)    Know your strength

2.)    Look to past achievements

3.)    Take Action

4.)    Trust your instinct

5.)    Resolve to keep yourself focus

6.)    Find a mentor

7.)    Have someone hold you accountable for your goals

8. ) Build Self-Confidence

I learned to not take things seriously.  Take full deep breaths.  Acknowledge the fear. And Go for it! Dive in anyway. Fear cannot stop you from acting.

AND REMEMBER that “anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly at first”

You have within you a reservoir of untapped talents and abilities you need and want to achieve anything in your life.  The only limits you and I have are the limits we give ourselves.  I believe if you want something bad enough and are willing to persist long enough, then NOTHING…I mean there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that can stop you from achieving it.

You just need to take that first step….

I shared with you my biggest fear before and what I learned from it, how about you?

Do you have any fears now that’s holding you back?  What tips and strategies do you follow to diminish your fears?  What philosophy do you live by in following your own inner voice and trusting your instinct?

  • Hi Theresa,

I surely love this article. Well, if you want to make progress, you've got to change. You've got to go out of the comfort zone. Everything you want, all the goodies, are outside the area where you currently are. Otherwise you would have your life of fulfillment, as you would dream to have it. You have to go outside the comfort zone.

And it does feel bad. That's why they call it the comfort zone and the uncomfort zone.

So when we talk about that, we recognize and embrace the uncomfort zone, because we know that anytime we're doing new things, that's when we're stretching our boundaries. That's why we talk about travel, that's why we talk about having friends of different types and nationalities, with different interests.

  • Hi Therese,
I for one am glad you took action and went ahead with the video blog. You are a natural! Some people never begin for fear of failure. Some people fail because they give up after one defeat. Defeat is meant to be temporary. Successful people know that failure is an opportunity to correct and re-correct again and again. I love your statement: “anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly at first” Right on.
  • And just think...if you didn't overcome this fear...we wouldn't get to hear your beautiful words or see your beautiful spirit on your blog! Thanks for this great post and for being so revealing and open with your feelings.

PS I felt and feel the same way when I make videos!

it's also funny you should pick up on excuses because thats the theme of this months magazine which has practically taken up most of my time.
take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the day.

  • Therese,

Thank you for this great post! Tackling our fear is an essential constituent to the building of our success. Most people spend a good deal of lives running from fear, and then one day the unthinkable happens, they decide to stop running, and decide to look fear in the eye, only to discover it is their own image.

I wish only the best for you.

  • Great job!

I agree that fear backs down when you challenge it. There are so many fears that I had years ago that seem so little today.
  • Ralph, That's the only way to tackle our fears is when we challenge and face it. Ultimately Take Action!
Thank You for stopping by! I hope I get to hear from you again. I appreciate it!

Hi Angel, I read all the people's post on your wonderful collaborations on the fear issue. I love how all of you were able to share and relate to the concept of fear. Also how fear can put you in your place, or it can make you great.

I have a saying " When fear is in the mind, doubt is not far behind. But when Doubt replaces Fear, then all is lost." Jeff Miu

"Fear is the greatest Illusion" Michael Jordan.

Thanks for the wonderful commitment you have, and for sharing your light with the world. Your videos are getting better every time you shoot. I still remember your 1st video. Keep it moving forward sweet heart. Looking forward to the next Video

Much love from Jeroen and I
  • Hi Hon, Thanks for reading everything. It is an instant POWER TEAM when collaboration is in place. The energy is contagious. Once again thanks for your wonderful comment. I have always loved your quote, "” When fear is in the mind, doubt is not far behind. But when Doubt replaces Fear, then all is lost.” Thanks for reminding me our highest deepest essence and coming to terms in living and accepting it. You are truly magnificient!
  • Hey Therese,

Thanks again for joining in on the collaboration!

You said it perfectly, "Life is simply too short NOT to do the things you want to do" Everyone is going to have the same excuses, fears, and worries. What counts is whether you have the courage to take action in spite of those fears.

Every time I get to that point where fear is popping up, I usually ask myself, "How badly do you want it?" If I know I want it badly, I suck it up, close my eyes, and just do it. If I can't answer that question with some form of "hell yeah!" then I know that it just wasn't for me.

I look forward to reading more of your stuff and getting to know ya! Take care
  • Hey Ben, How are you? I thoroughly enjoyed your post. I need to visit again and familiarize myself with your site. I like the question you ask yourself, “how bad do you really want it?” such a poignant question to ask oneself. The mind will always play monkey tricks on us but it is truly the heart that continually guides us. I look forward to getting to know you too Ben. I appreciate your time invested in doing this collaboration project. Let’s make sure to do it again real soon in the future. Count me in! ;) *cheers*
  • Hi Therese
As you say get on and do it - usually find that it's never as bad in practice as in your head.
I would add that sometimes it is better to "dip your toe in" and then your ankle and then your leg..... and do it in a supportive environment.

I try to persuade people that they can stand in front of an audience and deliver a speech, that scares most people.
Always surprises me how well people do in giving their first speech and their tenth speech.... they look like a pro..

BTW - you look like a natural to me - great video.

  • Hi Keith, Thanks for stopping by :) I appreciate it. Thanks for adding important tips such as "it is better to “dip your toe in” and then your ankle and then your leg….. and do it in a supportive environment." I love it. Supportive environment has helped me grow so much. Thank You for stopping by. Let me know what I can do to support you.
    Best Regards
  • Hi Therese,

I enjoyed participating in this blog collaboration with you.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with video blogging. Here are two parts that stood out to me:

"I learned to not take things seriously."

"AND REMEMBER that 'anything worth doing well is worth doing poorly at first'"

    Great points!

I definitely try to not take things too seriously. And when doing something new, a good strategy is to just start doing it and then keep improving.

    Thanks for the post!

  • Hi Greg How are you? Yeah I enjoyed it greatly. I am simply honored that Kim connected all of us. I'll be passing by your blog more often and get to know you. I am so happy you received value from my post. And yes I like when you said "when doing something new, a good strategy is to just start doing it and then keep improving." I love that! Thank You so much for stopping by. I am going to visit your blog now. Thank You Greg! :)))

    Hi Therese,

Thank you for participating. You share so beautifully -- not only your personal story, but a comprehensive step by step plan that anyone can implement.

I agree, it's vital to identify your strengths and to trust your inner voice. You can't go wrong following your heart!

Thank you again, for contributing. The exercise has shined a light on how much everyone has in common.

    Love and Light,
    Kim
  • Hi Lovely & Beautiful Kim, My sincere heartfelt respect for who you are and for the work that you do. I carry a smile in my heart knowing you are in my life esp. being so close to each other here in LA. We must get together sometime. I agree with you 100% we can't go wrong following our hearts. And yes the exercise did prove how much everyone has so much in common even though this is my first time meeting both Ben & Greg. It has been such a TRUE HONOR. Thank You Thank You so much for your love.
I appreciate you and sending you lots of love.
  • Ben
    Really liked this Therese!

Weirdly even though I'm a motivational speaker and regularly speak in front of hundreds of people, I really get anxious doing video. It's really personal and like you I have come up with lots of excuses. I like your points about finding video mentors.

The first step on a journey is always the most important
  • Hi Ben,ThanK You for visiting. What an honor to be featured in your blog. Thanks :) Well A good friend of mine has asked me to a small series of speaking engagements with him. Until to this day I am dreading it. I'll probably come up with lots of excuses. It is the same fear creeping up when I started doing vlogging. Anyway Thank you for sharing your insights with me here. I am glad you like my key point about finding a video mentor to look after. I appreciate you and look forward to reading your blog.
